Since 2002, the Professional Counseling Program at Carlow University cultivates respect for the uniqueness of individuals, groups, and families and is grounded in multicultural, social justice, inclusion, and advocacy which aligns with the counseling profession and the University’s mission. The program emphasizes wellness, prevention, development across the lifespan, and applies scholarship to clinical practice. The Professional Counseling Program takes an active role as a change agent within the community while cultivating and transforming students into counselor leaders. Our graduates provide individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, and family counseling and specialize in areas such as addictions, child/adolescent, gerontological, LGBTQ+, and military counseling to name a few.
The Professional Counseling Program offers a CACREP-accredited Masters of Professional Counseling Program: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Addictions Counseling Program Tracks; Post-Master’s Certifications in Addictions Counseling and School-Based Mental Health Counseling; and the Accelerated Masters Professional Counseling Program for Carlow Undergraduate students.
Master of Science (M.S.) Degree Program: School-Based Counseling Concentration
The 60-credit Master of Science (M.S.) Degree in Professional Counseling is a CACREP-accredited graduate program that takes a minimum of 2.5 years to complete. The program curriculum consists of 51 credits of foundational core and advanced specialized courses, 9 credits of electives tailored towards students’ professional interests, and 700+ clinical practice hours in counseling services.
Students enrolled in the School-Based Mental Health Counseling Concentration are required to take the following electives which included an additional 100 hour Fieldwork Experience at the Carlow Counseling Clinic at Woodland Hills. Additionally, students will graduate with 63 credits, a Masters of Science Degree, and a Post-Master Certificate in School-Based Mental Health Counseling.

Post-Master’s Certificate in School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) Counseling
The Post-Master’s SBMH Counseling Certificate consists of four, 4-credit courses (12 credits total) that provide students with specialized knowledge of evidence-based and developmentally informed assessment, treatment planning, interventions, and clinical skills to be utilized with children and adolescents within their larger systems, including school and family. Additionally, this certificate will emphasize the importance of understanding the cultural and social diversity of children, adolescents, their families, and their communities; and integrating cultural and social diversity considerations in all aspects of mental health prevention and intervention, including advocating for historically marginalized populations of children and adolescents.
