School-Based Mental Health Training (SBMHT) Program


The mission of the graduate-level School-Based Mental Health Training (SBMHT) Program is to increase the number and quality of mental health services to students in high-need school districts, as well as prepare Carlow students/professionals to work with children and adolescents from high-need communities in schools. The program seeks to provide Professional Counseling and Social Work graduate students and Post-Masters professionals with hands-on experience working with children and adolescents in high-need learning environments while providing additional professional trainings in trauma.

Students and Post-Masters professionals accepted into the SBMHT Program are eligible for an academic scholarships and a field experience stipend to assist with meeting the requirement of either the:

  • Post-Masters School-Based Mental Health Counseling Certificate
  • School Social Work Certificate

Training & Scholarship Program

School-Based Mental Health Certificate Courses:

  • PRC 725 Interventions with Children
  • PRC 749 Introduction to Play Therapy
    • 67.5 Association for Play Therapy (APT) Education Hours towards Registered Play Therapist (RPT) Credential
  • PRC 751 School-Based Mental Health Counseling Field Experience

School Social Work Certificate Courses:

  • MSW 727 Complex Trauma or MSW 752 Trauma Informed Community Practice   
  • MSW 741 Social Work in School
  • MSW 734 Field Placement III in a School-Based Setting
  • ED-778 Designed for Difference
  • SPED 770 Meeting the Needs of Mild/Moderate or SPED 773 Positive Behavior Supports PreK-12
  • Successfully complete the certificate courses (9 credits).
  • Maintain a B or higher in all certificate courses.
  • Attend all professional trainings.
  • Successfully complete a clinical fieldwork experience.
  • Commit to work 1-year in a high-needs learning environment or agency that provides school-based services following certificate completion.

Costs

The SBMH Training Institute is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant which covers the tuition costs for students to complete the SBMH Training program. Students will receive:

  • Academic scholarship for the 9 certificate credits
  • One-time stipend for the Field Experience
  • Subsidy funds for professional organization memberships, training fees, professional wardrobe, clinical clearances, textbooks, childcare, mileage

Current Students APPLY HERE

  • Students who are enrolled in the Professional Counseling or the Masters of Social Work Program with a Specialization in School Social Work at Carlow University.

Post-Degree students APPLY HERE

  • Mental Health Professionals who have graduated with a masters degree in counseling, social work, or related fields from an accredited university.
